The Parts of Speech

Every word is one part of speech or the other. The parts of speech are eight in number:-

1) Noun: It is a word used to name a person, place or thing.
For examples: Child, City, Book, Karachi, Azra

> This child comes from Karachi.

2) Pronoun: It is a word used in place of a noun.
For examples: He, She, They, It

> He is my friend.

3) Adjective: It is a word used to describe or add to the meaning of a noun or a pronoun.
For examples: Great, Small, Beautiful, Weak

>  He is our great leader.

4) Verb: It is a word which says something about a person, place or thing.
For examples: Sit, Jump, Is, Fail

> Please sit here, or go there.

5) Preposition: It is a word which shows in what relation a person or thing stands to something else.
For examples: On, In, Under, Above

> She placed a book on the table.
> Was he present in the class?

6) Conjunction: It is word which joins words or sentences.
For examples: And, Or, But, Through

> Sara, Tahseen and Naeem are going to Islamabad. 
> I helped the old man though I was very tired.

7) Adverb: It is a word which adds to the meaning of any part of speech except a noun or a pronoun.
For examples: Quickly, Honestly, Fast, Quite

> They returned quickly to their homes.
> She does her work honestly and fast.
> This building is quite beautiful.

8) Interjection: It is a word or sound which shows feeling or emotion.
For examples: Ah, ! Alas, ! Oh, ! Hurrah, !

> Ah! it is the same book I needed.
> Alas! our great leader is dead.
